Max Verstappen Faces Possible Points Deduction, Ban Over Criticism of F1 Governing Body

Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen could be facing a points deduction and potential race ban after repeatedly criticizing the FIA, the sport’s governing body, under newly revised misconduct guidelines. The reigning world champion has been outspoken in recent months, voicing frustrations over regulatory decisions, race management, and the increasing commercialization of the sport.

According to sources within the FIA, Verstappen’s comments have been flagged as breaches of the governing body’s updated Code of Conduct, which was quietly amended ahead of the 2025 season. The revisions include stricter penalties for public criticism that could be deemed as “damaging to the integrity of the sport.”

In a statement, an FIA spokesperson confirmed that Verstappen’s conduct is under review.

“The FIA is committed to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of Formula 1. While we respect drivers’ rights to express opinions, repeated public statements that undermine the governing body or officials may result in disciplinary action, including fines, points deductions, or suspensions.”

Verstappen’s frustration has been brewing since late last season, when controversial track limits rulings and safety car decisions cost him crucial race advantages. More recently, he blasted the FIA for what he called “overregulation” and “gimmicky” rule changes, including the continued push for sprint races and technical directives affecting Red Bull’s car development.

“I love racing, but at some point, it feels like we’re being controlled too much,” Verstappen said after the latest Grand Prix. “Drivers should be able to speak their minds without fear of punishment. If we can’t question decisions, what kind of sport is this?”

Red Bull Racing has yet to comment officially, but team principal Christian Horner is reportedly in discussions with FIA officials to prevent Verstappen from facing severe sanctions.

If penalties are imposed, it could have a major impact on the championship battle. A points deduction would not only put Verstappen at a disadvantage but could also shift momentum toward his closest rivals, such as Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, or Lando Norris. A race ban would be even more damaging, potentially derailing his title defense.

With tensions rising between drivers and the FIA, this situation could set a precedent for how outspoken competitors are allowed to be in the modern era of Formula 1. For now, all eyes are on the governing body’s next move—and how Verstappen will respond.
