The New York Knicks have their hands full with the present, as do The Cleveland Cavaliers. And maybe both teams will end up in the Eastern Conference finals of these playoffs.
And after that? They might get knotted again.
Word from Cleveland suggests that a series loss here to the Boston Celtics will trigger another round of trade rumors of the sort that have long involved Donovan Mitchell. …
And his hometown Knicks.
Literally immediately the Cavs acquired Mitchell in 2022, speculation continued – maybe even grew – that he might someday end up back in the Big Apple.
And that speculation, which also existed when Mitchell was with the Utah Jazz, has never really gone away.
“That (Mitchell situation) is very real,” one NBA executive tells The Athletic. “Teams will definitely clear out a bunch of (assets) for him. We’ll see. But if they face Boston in the second round, they’ll probably lose.
“And yeah, that doesn’t bode well (for his future in Cleveland).”
We don’t want to put the cart before the horse here; while the Mitchell connection with the Knicks is a sort of “open secret,” the Cavs haven’t lost the series to the Celtics just yet. And additionally, while it is true that New York has an abundance of ammo to use to lure him home, there will be big-time competition for his services.
