The New York Giants have a lot of questions about their quarterbacks this offseason.
One year on from signing a lucrative new contract, Daniel Jones will start the 2024 season as the presumptive starter, but the signing of Drew Lock from the Seattle Seahawks suggests that might change.
Tommy DeVito is still under contract and loved by fans after his unlikely rise to prominence in 2023, but he will likely be third string with Jones back and Lock joining the team. With DeVito and Tyrod Taylor starting 11 games last season, behind an injured Jones, the back-up position means Lock may have a chance to deputize for Jones.
However, the Giants also have the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, and general manager Joe Schoen has not ruled out selecting another quarterback.
“It’s a good quarterback draft,'” he said. “It’s not just at the top. There are some guys that are mid-levels that I think will be good No. 2s. There are some guys that can be No. 3s in the draft.”
Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels are expected to be off the board before the Giants pick at No. 6, leaving Michigan’s J.J.McCarthy as a potential option.
General manager Schoen has said Jones is still the starting quarterback, but they are worried about his health. He’s still recovering from the ACL injury that ended his season early last year, and his $23 million injury guarantee for 2025 means they would still have to pay his expensive contract.
There is an opportunity for the Giants to cut ties next season, but serious setbacks would make it hard to do so cleanly. Given Jones’ history of injuries, it might be cheaper to pay him not to play as the season goes on.
Lock will likely back up Daniel Jones this season after signing a one-year, $5 million guaranteed contract. He leaves Seattle, with their general manager John Schneider claiming he moved for the chance to compete to be a starter.
“I need to come in and push Daniel to be the best that he can be,” he told reporters Friday.
“I’ve had both sides of this. I’ve been a guy to push the starter, I’ve been a guy that’s been pushed by the backups. It’s about making that room the best it can be. If we can do that, the sky’s the limit for that.”
