Kevin Bazzell, a prominent player for the Texas Tech baseball team, has announced his departure from the program following a series of personal and professional challenges. Bazzell, who gained recognition as a standout high school athlete, had been a key figure in Texas Tech’s lineup but has decided to step away from the game for now.
Bazzell’s journey in baseball began at Rockwall-Heath High School, where he played under the guidance of head coach Greg Harvey. His high school career was marked by impressive achievements, including being ranked as the No. 2 catcher and No. 11 overall prospect in Texas. Nationally, he was recognized as the No. 11 catcher and No. 134 overall prospect by Perfect Game.
During his senior year, Bazzell was instrumental in leading his team to a state championship. His exceptional performance on the field earned him a spot on the 6A UIL State All-Tournament Team. He finished the season with a stellar batting average of .438, hitting five home runs and driving in 36 RBIs. His outstanding contributions were further recognized when he was named the District 10-6A Player of the Year and received the Dallas Morning News All-Area Offensive Player of the Year award.
Bazzell’s talent did not go unnoticed, as he was also named to the Perfect Game Preseason All-American Teams in both 2020 and 2021, showcasing his prowess as a top high school player. His summer ball experience with the Dallas Tigers under coach Tommy Hernandez added to his impressive resume, including a notable appearance in the 2020 WWBA World Championship game, where he was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Despite his successful high school career and the promise he showed at Texas Tech, Bazzell has faced several recent challenges that have influenced his decision to leave the program.
