HOW DO I FOOTBALL: The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Skip Holtz - The Daily Stampede

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Birmingham Stallions are undefeated and headed to the USFL Conference Championship Game against Michigan on June 8. Before that however, the Stallions still have three weeks of football remaining, including a game Saturday against Houston at Protective Stadium.

Head coach Skip Holtz, while appearing in his weekly segment on Friday’s Good Day Alabama, said his team is preparing for this game just like any other.

“We’ve talked all year about just fall in love with the process of what we have to do and that process begins every Sunday,” Holtz said. “It’s just falling in love with the process and getting into a routine with what we do week in and week out. I think if we don’t get our work done on Tuesday and Wednesday, it’s hard for us to play at the level we want to play at on the weekend.”

Birmingham, already a two-time, back-to-back USFL Champion, is in the middle of an undefeated year in the first season of the United Football League.

The team has had some close calls this year, winning once by just two points and a another by four. In the end, however, the Stallions are sitting atop the league with a perfect 7-0 record headed into this week’s game against Houston.

Birmingham dominated the Roughnecks in week five, winning 32-9 on the road. Holtz is not overlooking their opponent, however, despite the lopsided win earlier in the season.

“I think Houston’s a very dangerous team when you look at them right now. So, we just have to stay focused on where we are,” Holtz said, adding he takes it one game at a time. “We didn’t start out to go 7-0, we just started out to win the first game. And then we tried to win the second game and then the third, and it’s no different this week. We’re going to try to find a way to win a football game this weekend.”

When asked by WBRC’s Mike Dubberly about his favorite thing about this year’s team, Holtz pointed to the things than can’t be measured as what he loves the most.

“For me, it’s just the personalities that you’re dealing with, the commitment, the professionalism of this team. And then, the passion they play with on Saturdays,” he said. “We always talk about the intangibles, the things that you can’t measure at a combine. You can measure height, weight, speed, strength, quickness. You can measure all those things. What you can’t measure is heart. You can’t measure passion. You can’t measure togetherness. You can’t measure the mindset and the attitude they bring to work every day.”

Skip Holtz enters his third season leading the Birmingham Stallions. Renowned for his strategic prowess and leadership abilities, Holtz has steered the Birmingham Stallions to remarkable success, clinching two consecutive USFL Championships in 2022 and 2023, solidifying his status as one of the most accomplished coaches in the league.
