Dawson Merritt, a highly-touted linebacker from Blue Valley High School in Stilwell, Kansas, has emerged as one of the top prospects in the class of 2025. With an impressive stat line from last season, including 83 tackles, 17 for loss, and seven sacks, Merritt has caught the attention of college football programs across the nation.
Recently, Merritt announced that he’s narrowed down his college choices to two finalists, with Nebraska being one of them. His decision to include Nebraska as a finalist was influenced by his close relationship with the coaching staff. In an interview with Chad Simmons of the On3 network, Merritt emphasized the importance of his bond with the Nebraska coaching staff in his decision-making process.
Interestingly, Merritt has also hinted at communication with a certain Nebraska quarterback, indicating that he’s been in contact with current players at the university, which could further solidify his connection to the program.
Merritt took an official visit to Nebraska for the spring game at the end of April, immersing himself in the atmosphere of the campus and getting a feel for the football program firsthand. However, his recruitment journey isn’t over yet. He’s scheduled to visit Tuscaloosa on June 7, suggesting that Alabama is the other finalist in contention for his commitment.
With a decision expected shortly after his visit to Tuscaloosa, the college football world awaits Merritt’s announcement with bated breath. His choice will not only impact the future of the program he selects but also serve as a significant milestone in his own promising football career.
