The Giants are expected to add an outside player because they need healthy options at the offensive tackle position. Head coach Brian Daboll said on Friday that Chris Hubbard would be removed from the 49ers’ practice squad.
Due to recent surgery for a Lisfranc injury, Andrew Thomas will be sidelined for the entire year. Hubbard will continue to be an experienced option as at least a depth option, but Joshua Ezeudu will take over starting blindside duties in his place. The 33-year-old has made 94 appearances and made 58 starts.
Throughout his career, Hubbard has seen little use along the blindside, but he has spent the most of his playing time at right tackle. The former UDFA played one season in Tennessee after starting his NFL career in the AFC North (four years with the Steelers and five with the Browns). Despite failing to sign a free agency contract in the early part of the summer, Hubbard ended up getting nine starts at right tackle last season.
In an attempt to acquire competent options up front, the 49ers signed Hubbard in mid-May. But in the end, the UAB product was fired as part of San Francisco’s last roster reductions. Hubbard was quickly signed to a practice squad contract, but
This season, he has not yet seen any action on the active roster. When you get to New York, that will be different.
Losing Thomas will be a huge blow to the offense, which has been a weakness for the 2-4 Giants. However, Hubbard might be able to temporarily stabilize one of the tackle positions if he ends up getting playing time with his new squad. By doing this, his market value could increase before the upcoming summer.
