The announcement of Landon Robinson winning the 2024 Admiral Mack Award for the most improved player during Navy’s spring practices is a significant recognition for the rising junior nose tackle.
Hailing from Ohio, Robinson showcased his dedication and progress on the field, earning him this prestigious honor from the Navy coaching staff.
In the 2023 season, Robinson demonstrated his defensive prowess with notable stats, including 28 tackles, four sacks, and 4.5 tackles for loss (TFLs). Additionally, his versatility was evident as he executed a 24-yard carry on a fake punt, showcasing his agility and athleticism despite his imposing size of six feet tall and 278 pounds.
Robinson’s physical strength and athleticism were further highlighted by his inclusion in Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List, where his impressive stats included a reported 600-pound squat, 420-pound bench press, and a 33-inch vertical leap.
Such exceptional physical attributes undoubtedly contributed to his on-field performance and his recognition by the coaching staff.
The Admiral Mack Award holds special significance within the Navy football program, as it was initiated in 1976 and is named in honor of Vice Admiral William P. Mack, who served as the Naval Academy Superintendent from 1972 to 1975 and was a staunch supporter of the institution’s intercollegiate athletic endeavors.
Robinson’s win continues a trend, as rising senior defensive lineman Justin Reed claimed the award in the previous season. This consecutive recognition of defensive linemen underscores the team’s emphasis on defensive excellence and improvement.
Looking ahead, Navy concludes its spring practices under the guidance of head coach Brian Newberry, entering its second season under his leadership. The team’s performance in the 2023 season showed promise, with a 5-7 record marking their highest win total since 2019.
With a balanced 4-4 record in American Athletic Conference play, the Midshipmen are gearing up for the upcoming season, commencing on August 31 with a home game against FCS opponent Bucknell.
Robinson’s achievement serves as both a testament to his individual dedication and improvement and as motivation for the Navy football team as they prepare to build upon their successes and strive for further excellence in the upcoming season under Coach Newberry’s direction.
