The New York Giants’ attempts to lure quarterback Russell Wilson in free agency fell short, prompting speculation from Gordon McGuinness
of Pro Football Focus about alternative options. McGuinness suggested that the Giants could emerge as a “wild-card” team in pursuit of Justin Fields through a potential offseason trade with the Chicago Bears.
In a recent article, McGuinness highlighted concerns about the Giants’ current starter, Daniel Jones, stating that despite solid performances,
Jones hasn’t fully proven himself as a franchise quarterback. Meanwhile, Fields, with a 74.6 PFF grade in 2023 and consistent strong rushing
grades, could be seen as a better fit for head coach Brian Daboll’s offensive scheme.
There are growing rumors that both general manager Joe Schoen and Coach Daboll are disillusioned with Jones, especially given his recent
injury history, which includes two concerning neck injuries and a torn ACL in November. This has led to speculation that the Giants might
view Jones as a liability and seek alternatives.
Fields could potentially be available as a relatively low-cost, one-year rental, especially if the Bears are unwilling to keep him alongside
expected top draft pick Caleb Williams. Schoen’s history of declining options, as seen with Jones in 2022, suggests he might be open to
exploring Fields’ potential.
Despite recently signing backup Drew Lock, the Giants could still pursue Fields with a day-three draft pick offer to Chicago. While some have linked Fields to the Philadelphia Eagles, Bears GM Ryan Poles has vowed to treat Fields fairly, potentially giving him a shot at competing for the Giants’ starting job.
Unless Schoen has already committed to targeting a rookie quarterback in the upcoming draft, taking a chance on Fields could be a viable option for the Giants, especially considering their lack of a proven long-term QB1 on the roster.
An NFC East team that’s been mentioned as a potential destination for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields is the New York Giants.
Despite failing to secure Russell Wilson in free agency, the Giants are considered a ‘wild-card’ contender for Fields, according to analysis
from Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus. McGuinness suggests that the Giants could explore an offseason trade with the Bears to
acquire Fields, given the uncertainty surrounding their current starter, Daniel Jones, and Fields’ potential fit within head coach Brian
Daboll’s offensive system.
