With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, the excitement is ramping up for fans of the Minnesota Vikings (and the 31 other teams we don’t care about nearly as much). For
O’Connell was giving a talk at St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church in Plymouth on Thursday entitled “Faith and Leadership: Coaching in the NFL.” You can see the entirety of the speech here if you’re so inclined.
Towards the end of the session, one of the attendees asked O’Connell a question not about faith. . .or leadership. . .or coaching. Rather, he asked the coach about two of the quarterbacks that the Vikings might end up drafting on Thursday Night: North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.
He proceeded to give a pretty lengthy breakdown of their differences. I won’t transcribe the whole thing but if you want to hear the whole question and answer it starts at around the 1 hour, 19 minute mark of the above video.
The man who asked the question then followed up by suggesting that O’Connell could “work his Patriots connection” in order to trade up to 3. O’Connell was drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft but was only with the team for one season, so I’m not sure how many connections he might have there at this point. O’Connell did, however, give a pretty funny answer to the question:
The rumors about the Vikings wanting to trade up in order to secure a quarterback will continue to fly until the selection meeting kicks off in Detroit on Thursday night. I’m going to guess that Kevin O’Connell and anyone else with a connection to the Vikings’ organization will continue to get questions from all potential sources until they get to Eagan on Thursday.
Kevin O’Connell, head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, can’t escape draft speculation even when he’s giving a talk on faith and leadership at a church. Attendees at St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church in Plymouth took the opportunity to ask him about potential quarterback prospects for the Vikings, specifically Drake Maye from North Carolina and J.J. McCarthy from Michigan.
O’Connell, being in the spotlight, handled the question with grace, offering insights into the differences between the two quarterbacks. It’s not uncommon for fans to seize any opportunity to gather information about their favorite team’s draft plans, even if it means asking about it in unexpected places like a church event.
The attendee even jokingly suggested that O’Connell could use his past connection with the New England Patriots to facilitate a trade up to the third overall pick. While O’Connell’s stint with the Patriots was brief, it’s amusing to see fans trying to brainstorm ways for the Vikings to secure a top pick in the draft.
With the draft approaching, speculation and rumors will only intensify until the actual selections are made. O’Connell and others associated with the Vikings organization will likely continue to field questions and rumors until they’re on the clock in Detroit. It’s all part of the excitement and anticipation leading up to one of the biggest events in the NFL calendar.
