Tommy DeVito did it again. After an unflattering start with a 17-49 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants’ undrafted rookie has become a revelation in the NFL, earning him comparisons with none other than the legendary quarterback Tom Brady.
With his victory on Monday Night Football in Week 14, a dramatic win over the Green Bay Packers, DeVito accumulated his third consecutive victory, leaving the Giants with a 5-8 record and reviving a spark of hope in the postseason with four weeks of activity ahead.
Tommy’s hot streak includes 31-19 win over the Washington Commanders and 10-7 over the New England Patriots. In those four games, the University of Illinois graduate has accumulated 83 completions in 126 attempts, with 855 yards, eight touchdowns, three interceptions, and a rating of 96.5 points.
The rookie’s numbers and history have drawn inevitable comparisons to Brady, who was also a mid-season replacement and went on to win six Super Bowls and is a sure future Hall of Famer.
Despite everything, Giants head coach Brian Daboll does not allow himself to be drawn into comparisons that he considers out of place.
At the postgame news conference at FedEx Field, Daboll interrupted a reporter seeking to make the increasingly frequent comparison. “Yeah, we’re four games in. I do appreciate the question,” the coach said mid-question.
However, when the reporter persisted in questioning him, Daboll explained, “That’s a long time ago. I’d just say every situation is different. I couldn’t probably give you the answer that you are looking for.”
Daboll, who was a Patriots defensive assistant from 2000-2001 and receivers coach from 2002 to 2006, witnessed Brady’s rise firsthand.
Despite everything, he refused to enter the comparison game. “I couldn’t give you a tangible story or anything like that. It was a different time, different players, different team, but obviously (Brady’s career) is well-documented,” he said.
