Breaking News: ‘Wild-card’ NFC East team linked with Bears QB Justin Fields

The New York Giants’ pursuit of quarterback Russell Wilson in free agency fell short, leading to speculation from Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus regarding alternative options. McGuinness proposed that the Giants could emerge as a “wild-card” team in the chase for Justin Fields through a potential offseason trade with the Chicago Bears.

In a recent analysis, McGuinness expressed concerns about the Giants’ current starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, noting that despite his solid performances, Jones has yet to definitively establish himself as a franchise quarterback. Conversely, Fields, with a PFF grade of 74.6 in 2023 and consistent strong rushing metrics, could potentially be a better fit for head coach Brian Daboll’s offensive scheme.

Rumors are circulating that both general manager Joe Schoen and Coach Daboll are disenchanted with Jones, particularly given his recent injury history, which includes two concerning neck injuries and a torn ACL in November. This speculation has fueled the notion that the Giants may perceive Jones as a liability and therefore explore alternative options.

Fields could potentially be acquired as a relatively low-cost, one-year rental, especially if the Bears are unwilling to retain him alongside their anticipated top draft pick, Caleb Williams. Schoen’s past history of declining options, as evidenced by his decision regarding Jones in 2022, indicates a willingness to consider other possibilities, including Fields.

Despite the recent acquisition of backup Drew Lock, the Giants could still pursue Fields by offering a day-three draft pick to Chicago. While some observers have linked Fields to the Philadelphia Eagles, Bears GM Ryan Poles has pledged to treat Fields fairly, potentially affording him an opportunity to compete for the starting job with the Giants.

Unless Schoen has already committed to targeting a rookie quarterback in the upcoming draft, taking a chance on Fields could represent a viable option for the Giants, particularly given their lack of a proven long-term QB1 on the roster. As such, the Giants are mentioned as a potential destination for Fields within the NFC East.
