The San Francisco 49ers have addressed their need for interior defensive line depth by signing Jordan Elliott to a two-year, $10 million deal. Elliott, a former third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns, brings experience and durability to the 49ers’ defensive front. He has started 31 games over the last two seasons with the Browns, recording 4.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss in that time.

This signing comes amid the reported release of starting defensive tackle Arik Armstead, who refused to take a pay cut as part of a contract restructure. The release of Armstead, the team’s longest-tenured player, is not yet official. Additionally, Javon Kinlaw, the 14th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, has agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Jets.

With Kevin Givens and Sebastian Joseph-Day still on the open market, the 49ers have made a move to solidify their defensive line with the addition of Elliott. They also have 11 draft picks to address various needs, including potentially investing in the interior defensive trenches.

Given the struggles of the 49ers’ run defense down the stretch, particularly as Armstead dealt with injuries, the addition of Elliott provides much-needed depth and stability.
