The Pittsburgh Steelers will have an entirely new quarterback room in 2024, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields joining the room amid the departures of Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky.
The Steelers will not release a depth chart for the 2024 season until the first week of August, but head coach Mike Tomlin has already decided to announce that one of his new acquisitions will be starting the offseason ahead of the other.
Tomlin has decided, that at least for the early part of the offseason, Wilson will be his team’s starting quarterback. He didn’t have to make that announcement or tell his team that one player would be starting ahead of the other.

ittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin placed a touching phone call to a reporter’s ailing mother, in a video shared Monday by RotoWire’s Brandon Kravitz.
Tomlin appears casual and comfortable while speaking jovially and joking with the reporter’s mother over the phone.
“I wish you nothing but the best. Like, like fight that fight,” he told her.
“Get out of the hospital and, just like, know that you got a son that loves you, man. We’re in a cool spot. We had an opportunity to talk about you and I just want to get you on the phone and wish you the absolute best,” Tomlin told her.
Mike Tomlin is the longest tenured head coach in the NFL. He’s delivered his team to the postseason in 11 of his 17 seasons. He’s one of the most well-respected and accomplished coaches in NFL history. He’s also, clearly, a stand-up dude. (RELATED: NFL Team Releases Star CB After Sheriffs Issue Warrant For His Arrest)
The two-time Super Bowl winner looks a little loose and free here. Perhaps he was enjoying some libations at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando. And why shouldn’t he? He just got not one, but two starting caliber quarterbacks after years of languishing in QB-mediocrity.
His team’s additions of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields gives them two signal callers that are both significant upgrades over Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky.
You can almost see that his demeanor has shifted from the stress of the 2023 season. As if the weight of contemplating his choices between Mason Rudolph and Pickett have been lifted. He’s a new man and he’s ready to share that lighthearted spirit with everybody.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are embarking on a fascinating quarterback journey this season.
Their presumed starter will be Russell Wilson, a former Pro Bowl and Super Bowl champion quarterback trying to find his footing after a failed stint with the Denver Broncos. His backup will be Justin Fields, a young, talented if inconsistent starter seeking any measure of traction after his own failed stint with the Chicago Bears.
It certainly seems like Mike Tomlin is overjoyed that he’ll coach the latter Fields while the veteran Wilson serves as his mentor.
During the AFC coaches’ breakfast at the NFL’s annual league meeting, Tomlin was asked about his impression of Fields as a quarterback. The future Hall of Fame coach wasted no time gushing about Fields’ toughness and his capacity to be a leader as a franchise quarterback:
Mike Tomlin on Justin Fields:
“Oh my gosh, he oozes talent and potential. He’s worn the responsibility of being a franchise quarterback, but still he gets the opportunity to come into a community-like situation and learn from a guy who has been doing it for over a decade. Man,… pic.twitter.com/TouDaWC9Sl

Take notes, folks. That’s how a tried-and-true coach sets the table for his coaching of a young quarterback who needs some good old-fashioned confidence, structure, and support. Tomlin is one of one.
If there were anyone who could help turn Fields into a viable, upper-crust starter, it’d be him.
