The Patriots are set to extend offensive lineman Michael Onwenu’s tenure with a three-year contract, as confirmed by a league source on Monday.
Onwenu, who opted to handle negotiations himself after parting ways with his representation, secured a deal worth potentially $57 million,
featuring $38 million in guaranteed money.
During the NFL Scouting Combine held two weeks ago, both de facto general manager Eliot Wolf and coach Jerod Mayo expressed keen
interest in keeping Onwenu on the team. They lauded the 2020 sixth-round pick as a “cornerstone” due to his exceptional versatility, being
proficient at both guard and tackle positions.
Mayo emphasized Onwenu’s dominance when in top form.
Given the New England Patriots’ sporadic performance along the offensive line last season, Onwenu’s capability to shift to tackle significantly
contributed to stabilizing the unit. Throughout his four seasons with the Patriots, Onwenu has showcased his versatility by starting games at
right guard, left guard, and right tackle.
