SHOCKING COMMITMENT: No. 1 Top-Rated 5-Star QB Stuns Gators with Decommitment, Flips Commitment to Ohio State Over Alabama, LSU, and Others
Ohio State has reclaimed the top spot, defeating Notre Dame 34-23 to secure the College Football Playoff National Championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Monday night.
With this victory, Ohio State has now won nine college football titles, tying with USC for the fourth-most NCAA championships of all time.
This win also marks their first title since the 2014 season, which was the inaugural College Football Playoff.
The Buckeyes have transformed into a completely different team since their loss to Michigan in the rivalry game. After decisively defeating Tennessee (42-17), Oregon in the Rose Bowl (41-21), and Texas in the Cotton Bowl (28-14), Ohio State rode their high-powered offense to overcome Notre Dame and take home the championship.
However, this game didn’t follow the usual pattern of Ohio State’s playoff victories. Notre Dame made a statement early with an 18-play opening drive that ate up more than nine minutes of the first quarter.
Despite that, momentum quickly shifted in favor of Ohio State. Will Howard and his group of talented players didn’t just answer back, they took control when they got the ball.
The next drive was an 11-play, 75-yard march, capped off by freshman sensation Jeremiah Smith, who ran a flawless play. He faked running behind Howard in pre-snap motion, then planted his foot and walked into the end zone uncontested.
Ryan Day’s team not only tied the game, but their defense stepped up, forcing consecutive three-and-outs on Notre Dame’s second and third drives. The Buckeyes’ offense capitalized, adding two more touchdowns before the end of the first half.
