North Carolina head coach Scott Forbes was named the 2024 ABCA/ATEC NCAA Division I Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, announced the American Baseball Coaches Association on Tuesday.
The ABCA/ATEC Regional Coaches of the Year are selected by members of the ABCA All-America & Coach of the Year Committees in all nine divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division and high school.
Forbes, a first-time award winner, becomes the third UNC coach to receive the accolade, along with four-time recipient Mike Fox and 1989 winner Mike Roberts.
Forbes, the 2024 ACC Coach of the Year, led the Tar Heels to a 48-16 overall record with a 22-8 mark in the conference while winning the league’s Coastal Division title and claiming the unofficial regular season championship.
UNC defeated LSU to win the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional and then swept West Virginia to win the Super Regional and advance to the program’s 12th College World Series.
The Tar Heels’ 48 wins are the most in Forbes’ four years at the helm of the program and the most since winning 49 in 2017.
Under his tutelage, nine Tar Heels received All-ACC honors, and seven were selected for various All-America teams.
Junior Vance Honeycutt was named First Team All-America by the ABCA and Perfect Game. He became UNC’s first ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove recipient after being named ACC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.
Parks Harber, Matthew Matthijs and Dalton Pence also received All-America accolades while Jason DeCaro, Gavin Gallaher and Luke Stevenson were earned Freshman All-America honors.
