So Sad: QB Kyron Drónes reportedly announces departure after agreeing to sign with…

What Is Virginia Tech Getting In Kyron Drones? | TechSideline.comVirginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones didn’t release an official announcement like Antwaun Powell-Ryland or Josh Fuga did recently, but on Wednesday morning, Virginia Tech’s starting signal caller made his declaration on the Big Dawg Sports Talk radio show with Rick Watson, announcing that he would be returning to Virginia Tech for the 2024 season.

“Oh yeah, I love Virginia Tech. I love it here. The fans love football here. It’s a great atmosphere, especially on game days. We’re just getting started. We’re getting rolling and next year is going to be even more special.”

The news, which can be heard here in the Hour 3 segment around the 41:00 mark, should not come as a huge surprise to Virginia Tech fans but does eliminate some stress from Hokie Nation after going through several off-seasons looking to upgrade the quarterback position.

Drones, who arrived in Blacksburg roughly a year ago after transferring from Baylor, has quickly become a key to the Hokies offense. After initially losing the starting job to Grant Wells, Drones was elevated to the starter’s role following a leg injury in the second week of the season to Wells.

Since taking over the job as Virginia Tech’s starting quarterback, Drones unlocked the Hokies’ offensive potential with both his arm and his power run game. In the regular season, Drones passed for 1,993 yards and 15 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

In the run game, Drones was credited with 642 yards on 146 carries, averaging 4.4 yards per carry and four touchdowns on the season.

In the interview, Drones talks about his role as the starting quarterback, his time in the transfer portal before enrolling at Virginia Tech, when he knew that Blacksburg was a special place, and more.

Later this month, Virginia Tech will travel to Annapolis, MD, to take on Tulane in the 2023 Military Bowl. The Hokies finished the regular season 6-6 and reached bowl eligibility following a 55-17 drumming of in-state rival Virginia.
