Todd Robert Bowles to renegotiations the terms of his current contract of a new seven-year with Tampa Bay Buccaneers in an interview in the last one hour.
In Tampa, Florida, Bruce Arians has announced his departure as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a successful three-year tenure, transitioning into a front-office role within the organization, as per a statement released by the team on Wednesday night.
Taking the helm as the new head coach will be Todd Bowles, who has been serving as the Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator. Sources close to ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed that the team finalized a fresh five-year head coaching contract with Bowles earlier in the day.
Arians clarified to ESPN that this transition does not equate to retirement for him. He stated, “No, moving to the front office. I’m still working.” Arians has played an integral part in scouting draft prospects, and this move guarantees his continued involvement in that aspect. His new position will be titled as senior football consultant.
Despite facing health challenges throughout his career, Arians, aged 69, emphasized that his decision was not health-related. The move comes after weeks of collaboration between Arians and the Buccaneers on a succession plan. Arians personally informed players and coaching staff of his decision before the official announcement.
During his tenure, Arians achieved remarkable success, boasting a 31-18 record (.633) over three seasons, the highest win percentage of any Buccaneers coach in history. He led the team to victory in Super Bowl LV in 2020, winning five playoff games, surpassing the combined playoff wins of previous Buccaneers coaches.
In a statement, Arians expressed his gratitude for his coaching career and highlighted the excitement for his new role. He stated, “It has been one hell of a ride, but I know this is the right time for me to make this transition.”
Bowles, aged 58, was handpicked by Arians as his successor, a decision long in the making. Bowles previously served as head coach for the New York Jets from 2015 to 2018, along with a brief stint as interim coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2011.
The appointment of Bowles ensures continuity within the Buccaneers staff, which has remained largely unchanged since their Super Bowl victory, with only a few departures among assistants.
Bowles’ appointment also marks an increase in diversity among NFL head coaches, as he becomes the sixth minority head coach in the league and the fourth Black head coach in Buccaneers history.
Given Arians’ transition, the Buccaneers now join a considerable number of NFL teams undergoing coaching changes this offseason, with nearly a third of the league set to have new head coaches for the upcoming season, the highest turnover since 2008-2009.
