Georgia Southern University announced that Jared Benko, the Director of Athletics, will leave his role after more than four years of extraordinary growth and success. He is departing to take on the position of Executive Deputy Director of Athletics at Auburn University. Benko, who joined Georgia Southern in March 2020, played a key role in transforming the Athletics Department through significant achievements in fundraising, capital projects, and competitive success.
Georgia Southern University President, Dr. Kyle Marrero, praised Benko for his visionary leadership and lasting impact on the athletics program. He highlighted Benko’s success in fundraising and commitment to both academic and athletic excellence, noting that his contributions will positively affect student-athletes, coaches, and fans for years to come.
Benko’s leadership resulted in record-breaking fundraising achievements, securing over $40.95 million in the past four fiscal years. This includes a remarkable $12.99 million raised in the 2023-2024 fiscal year alone, representing a 185% increase over previous records. These funds have been instrumental in financing historic facility upgrades, such as the $65 million Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center, a $15 million training facility, and a $10 million expansion for J.I. Clements Stadium, home to Georgia Southern’s baseball team.
In addition to financial achievements, Benko made a significant impact on Georgia Southern’s competitive success. Under his guidance, the Eagles hosted their first NCAA Baseball Regional in 2022, marking a historic milestone. The athletics program also saw strong conference performance, with 11 of 16 sports finishing in the top half of the Sun Belt Conference during the 2023-2024 year. These accomplishments included back-to-back bowl appearances for the football team and multiple conference championships in women’s and men’s golf, women’s soccer, and other sports.
Benko’s tenure was also marked by an emphasis on academic achievement. During his time, Georgia Southern’s student-athletes reached a record-setting cumulative GPA of 3.18, reflecting his commitment to their overall development. His focus on both athletics and academics created a balanced environment for student-athletes to thrive.
Under Benko’s leadership, Georgia Southern Athletics also became a leader in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) programming. The university launched several NIL initiatives, positioning itself at the forefront of student-athlete support. Notably, Georgia Southern was one of the first schools in the FBS to host a large concert fundraiser for NIL and to establish an Athlete Brand Management department. The school also hired one of the first NIL employees at a non-autonomy institution, further strengthening its NIL efforts.
Reflecting on his time at Georgia Southern, Benko expressed gratitude for the support from the university community. He emphasized the importance of the people and shared values at Georgia Southern and thanked President Marrero for his mentorship. Benko also acknowledged the commitment of Eagle Nation, whose unwavering support made his achievements possible, and expressed confidence that the university’s best days are ahead.
Benko’s leadership extended beyond athletics and academics, focusing on the holistic development of student-athletes. He introduced the Athletes Preparing for Employment Experiences (APEX) program and created a leadership institute to support the personal and professional growth of student-athletes. Additionally, he added nutrition fueling stations to athletic facilities and launched a Women’s Leaders program (W.E. Lead) to help prepare student-athletes for life after sports.
In his role as Chair of the Sun Belt Conference Athletic Directors Committee from 2022 to 2024, Benko implemented a five-year strategic plan for Georgia Southern Athletics. This plan, designed for the department’s growth and success from 2021 to 2026, laid the groundwork for continued development and progress.
Bryan Burke, Chair of the Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation, expressed gratitude for Benko’s leadership, noting that his efforts contributed to over $100 million in athletic facility improvements. Burke acknowledged Benko’s impact on all 17 men’s and women’s sports programs and emphasized that Benko leaves the department in a strong position for future success.
Georgia Southern University has announced plans to begin the search for Benko’s successor. His last day with the university will be November 15, marking the conclusion of a remarkable tenure that has reshaped the athletics program.
