Steelers host 2024 NFL Draft Prospect, Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. to pre-draft visit
With the Pittsburgh Steelers signing Russell Wilson, trading for Justin Fields and adding backup QB Kyle Allen during free agency, it seemed obvious that those are the team’s three QBs going into 2024.
And sure, Pittsburgh will probably add a college-free agent to be a camp arm, but it didn’t or doesn’t feel like any real investment would be made at the position in terms of draft capital.
That may no longer be the case:
Steelers Still Shopping At QB?
Penix told ESPN that he has pre-draft visits scheduled with the Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders, Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers beginning next week. -Brady Henderson, ESPN
Penix’s comments come off the heels of his Pro Day last week, a workout that his him back in the first round conversation after posting exceptional athletic numbers for a QB via a 40-yard dash in the 4.5″s and a 36.5-inch vertical.
That paired with the best deep ball in the class and a cannon for an arm will leave teams very intrigued about his potential, even if he’s going to be a bit older for a rookie and has a significant injury history.
But Pittsburgh typically reserves their official vists for players they have significant interests in, and are within range of their first-round pick. And while Penix certainly falls within the latter, some believe the former is all a smokescreen:
“[Penix] might be someone they are interested in, three or four years down the road, type of situation,” The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly told Chris Mueller of 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh. “I don’t think it is anything they are really interested in right now to be able to draft him. Especially if he can go late first, early second.”
So look, I don’t expect Pittsburgh to draft Penix either. The Steelers like to do their due diligence when it comes to players who’s tape they like, as you never know what the future holds in the NFL.
But with so many other needs and a rebuilt QB room, this move seems pretty unlikely.
